본고는 제임스 맥도웰(James Macdowell)의 아이러니 이론을 기반으로 하여 <복수는 나의 것>에 나타난 박찬욱의 아이러니 기법을 확인하고자 하였다. 분석 결과, <복수는 나의 것>에는 아이러니한 상황에서 비롯되는 극적 아이 러니(dramatic irony)와 아이러니한 표현 방식에서 발생하는 커뮤니케이티브 아이러니(communicative irony)가 다양하게 혼재하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었 다. 극적 아이러니가 주로 인물의 비극적 상황을 강조하는 역할을 한다면 커뮤니케이티브 아이러니는 극중 인물의 비극적 상황을 비꼬거나 조롱하는 방 식의 영화적 역할을 수행한다. 텍스트 분석을 통해 <복수는 나의 것>에 사용 된 아이러니 기법은 유달리 비극적 효과가 두드러진다는 점을 확인할 수 있 었다. 아이러니 기법은 텍스트적 차원에서의 분석뿐만 아니라 영화감독 박찬 욱의 미학적 세계를 이해하는 하나의 도구가 되기도 한다. 본고에서는 <복수 는 나의 것>의 텍스트 분석을 통해 직부감 앵글이나 롱테이크 혹은 부조화스 러운 배경 음악 등과 같은 비-관습적 연출 방식을 발견하였는데 이는 극적 상황에서 정서적 거리를 둔 아이러니스트의 반어적 표현 방식으로써 해석과 수용이 가능하다.
Abstract
This study is to confirm Park Chan-wook’s ironic technic in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance based on James Macdowell’s irony theory. It was confirmed that in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance, dramatic irony resulting from an ironic situation and communicative irony based on an ironic expression are mixed in various ways. While dramatic irony functions cinematically in a way that further emphasizes the character’s tragic situation, communicative irony works by ironically and cynically the character’s tragic situation. Through the analysis, it was confirmed that the irony technique used in Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance has a particularly pronounced tragic effect. The irony technique is not only a textual analysis, but also a tool to understand the aesthetic world of Park Chan-wook, the film director. The non-conventional production methods such as ‘Over Head Shot’, ‘long take shot’ or ‘incongruent music, which are the expressive characteristics of his work, were able to be interpreted as ironist’s ironic expression that has emotional distance in dramatic situation of the film.
