Abstract

Although it is evident that music plays a vital role in viewing video media, the theoretical foundation has not been sufficiently investigated. The electroencephalography(EEG) analysis was used to examine the effect of background music tempo on the viewer's Empathy and immersion in video media. Participants' EEG responses were recorded while watching an action movie in three conditions (a. no background music, b. slow-tempo background music, c. fast-tempo background music). The Mu rhythm suppression, which is a measure of empathy and immersion associated with the activation of the sensorimotor cortex, was used to analyze participants' responses. The results revealed that participants' empathy/immersion increased when background music was present, but there was no difference in empathy/immersion according to tempo. This research is expected to contribute to developing a theoretical foundation for the role of music in viewing video media.
