Abstract

Police academy training of other countries such as England and Japan emphasizes field adaptation training of newly recruited police officers by providing both theoretical and practical training. However, Korean National Central Police Academy provides a relatively short time-period of training (24 weeks). The National Central Police Academy provides only 4 weeks of actual on-the job training. Therefore, most of the new recruits report a fear about unclear job duty. They want to learn more skillful techniques before implementing actual police authority. In order to solve this problem, even though there are some differences among local police academies, local police academies have provided three days or a one-week length of field adaptation training since 2000. This study examines a field adaptation training program for new police officers in a police academy of G Provincial Police Agency by surveying and in-depth interviewing. Based on the finding, this study proposes policy recommendation. Most of the trainees were satisfied with the curriculum of field adaptation training. Especially, they preferred case simulation training and police gear training. However, it is recommended to provide separate education between combatㆍauxiliary police forces and general police officers; between male and female officers. Also, the field adaptation training should be provided repeatedly instead of one-time training. Conclusively, the field adaptation training of local police academy should be provided repeatedly as well as continuously. Also the curriculum needs to consider the unique local situations. Recently, individual officer’s behavior is monitored by citizens through internet and other high-tech communication facilities. Therefore, police ethical education should be emphasized to make honest and clean police organization.
