Abstract

The primary aim for this study is to figure out the effective factors on community attachment through using multi-level analysis. Community attachment is defined as an affective feeling about residential environment around community and is a primary concept to expect social integration and community control. To accomplish this goal, this study attempted to use the data collected from 923 questionaries derived from 44 communities in Dae-gu City and adopted hierarchical linear regression models throughout using HLM 7.0. Statistical results from mean differences of community attachment across participants’ characteristics show that there are statistical differences across gender, home ownership, types of houses, victimization, house income, length of residence, and fear of crime. Female, homeowner, non-victim persons show a lower level of attachment whileas persons with monthly house income less than3 million-won, higher fear of crime, short length of living in community are more likely to show lower level of attachment. In addition, correlation, occupation and length of residence in community level are positively related to community attachment. Moreover, except for disorder, social cohesion, neighboring, and formal social control are also positively related to attachment. the variance of community attachment was explained by 16% in the basis model by using HLM which meant that community attachment needed to examine in the multi-level analysis. In the final model, gender, home ownership, length of residence, social ties, and fear of crime in individual level of explaining factors were found significant variables whileas only residential instability and occupation had significant effects on attachment among community level variables. Since community effects were too small, the author attempted to adopt an additional analysis simultaneously considering the same variables(social cohesion, formal social control, neighboring, diroder and so on) in individual and community levels. The results have shown that several individual variables including age, home ownership, length of residence, home income, fear of crime, social cohesion, neighboring, formal social control, disorder, and occupation were shown significant effects to predict community attachment. As a result, to predict community attachment, individual level of effective factors is more important than community level of predictors. So that it is necessary to discuss a way to promote community attachment by using a strategy to innovate individual level of perceptions.
