Abstract

In accordance with the 「Act on the Organization and Operation of National Police and Municipal Police」, which was completely amended on December 22, 2020, the municipal police system was implemented nationwide from July 2021. This can be said to be the result of the government's efforts and expected effects to provide local security services tailored to the local community's security needs and to provide security services closely related to residents' lives according to the needs and expectations of local residents. However, despite the positive purpose of the introduction, the municipal police system introduced by our country is being operated in a unified way in which the existing organization and manpower are maintained. A bigger problem is that, despite the fact that the municipal police system was introduced with the goal of meeting the needs of local communities and residents for security, the level of awareness among citizens about the introduction of the municipal police system is very low, and it is difficult to feel such changes. Therefore, in this study, the level of awareness among citizens of the municipal police system, especially the Korean municipal police system introduced by our country, is investigated, and based on the results of the survey, a plan to more accurately recognize the Korean municipal police system is prepared. Through this, research was conducted to suggest a development direction so that the efforts invested in introducing the municipal police system over the past 60 years can have practical effects, and ultimately to induce positive benefits to local communities and citizens.
