Abstract
Ports are performing a great deal of activities including transport of passengers as well as different kinds of cargos ranging from standardized containers to dangerous and hazardous substances such as crude oil, flammable chemicals, etc. This means ports are not only the critical points connecting land and water but places encompassing fatal risk of huge accidents in and around the ports. Various types of accidents occurring in a port area can result in not only serious environmental problems due to the release of a hazardous material(oil, gas, etc) but death of many innocent lives. However, in Korea, detailed studies on potential risks in ports and surrounding areas have not much been researched compared to other countries. In this paper we present a methodology to perform a risk analysis on the effect of ship accidents and to present the resulting risk using the accident data collected for the 12domestic ports over the last 5 years from 2002 to 2007.
