This study aims to examine the correlation between language ideology and ethnicity through exploring how power acts in the relationship between ethnicity and language. This study outlines a theoretical framework for language ideology in immigrant language research. Firstly, it explores the concepts of ethnic, ethnicity identity, race, and nationality. Secondly, this study examines the balance of power acting in the relation between ethnicity and language ideology. Thirdly, the exploration of the correlation between language ideologies and ethnicity in relation to immigrant language maintenance has been accomplished in the literature of linguistic anthropology, sociology of language, and Asian-American studies. These discussions are necessary to achieve a fuller understanding of immigrant language maintenance.
Abstract
