Abstract

This paper examines the expression of shame in male and female characters in chaste women’s narratives and Hwejeol Fiction(Stories about Men Breaking His Faith) mediated by the ‘body’. It analyzes the specific content and nature of shame, and how the characters’ emotions of shame affect the narrative. Shame is a social construct, and is formed in close relation to social ideology, ideals, and social change. Women in chaste women’s narratives praising chastity suffer from ‘shame anxiety’, fearing the risk of sexual scandals and rape in their daily lives, which leads to their downfall by killing themselves. At this time, shame functions as the ‘background emotion’ behind the female subject’s act of suicide. Women who have internalized the ideology of chastity want to prove their chastity even by killing themselves. The conspirators in Hwejeol Fiction(Stories about Men Breaking His Faith) such as “Oyuranjeon,” “Baebijangjeon,” and “Jongokjeon” define the male protagonist’s “stiffness in trying to avoid women” as abnormal. And by giving this stiffness a sense of “naked” shame, they correct their thoughts and actions by making the male subject pass the civil service exam with that power. Unlike the catastrophic ending of women, men’s shame acts as a positive force. Ultimately, shame serves to reinforce social conformity and reproduce the existing social order for both women and men. For women, shame has become a powerful means of sexual control in the name of chastity, and for men, shame solidifies the sexual ideology that it is natural to approach women.
