Abstract

This paper examines <Mun> (door, short story Mun, long story Mun), which records Lee Ho-cheol’s experience of being detained in the socio-political context of the Emergency Measures era in the 1974. <Mun> focuses on Lee Ho-cheol’s autobiographical experience of being detained in the “literati spy group incident.” This paper examines the significance of Lee Ho-cheol’s novel as a literary truth-testimony text by recording the violence inherent in the detention center (prison) and legal procedures as a law-dispositif that demonstrates the power of emergency measures. In this novel, Lee Ho-cheol is indicted on espionage charges and locked up in a detention center because he is of the Refugee to south korea descent. <Mun> records the experience of being taken in and detained, and realistically records the fact that the “spy (fabricated) incident” and the detention center(prison) functioned as a black-box as a law-dispositif under the emergency measures of the Yushin regime, thereby revealing the legal violence of dictatorial power. This paper analyzes the detention center(prison) as a ‘law-dispositif’ and a ‘state of exception’, and confirms how the violence of law by sovereign power creates ‘homo sacer’(bare life). Through the autobiographical character of the author of the novel, it functions through the law-device and shows fundamental resistance to the violent biopolitics of biopower, and aims for the structure of ‘division-democratization-unification’. In the dimension of this orientation, the narrative of Mun suggests the possibility of restoring inter-Korean relations as human life and resolving the conflict of division through the letters between the main character and 'death row inmate Kang'. The 'door' of the prison(detention center), a space of confinement, symbolizes the 'door' of the division of the North and South, and contains the hope of opening while closing at the same time.
