본 연구의 목적은 농인의 가정생활에서 다른 구성원과의 상호작용을 비롯한 문화적 현상들을 기술하고 원활하고 풍요로운 가정생활을 위한 대책을 알아보기 위한 것이다. 본 연구의 대상은 농인의 가족 상호작용에 대해 가장 풍부한 정보를 줄 수 있는 농인 대학생, 및 대학원생, 농인 종교인, 대학 졸업생과 직장인으로 ‘의도적 표본 추출’ 하였다. 자료 수집은 참여 관찰을 중심으로 하였고, 현장 노트와 심층 면담을 겸하면서 내부자의 관점으로 심도 있게 묘사 하였다. 분석과정에서는 농인 문화 맥락 밖으로 나와 외부자 관점에서 농인 문화를 해석 하고자 하였다. 이상의 연구 결과를 통해 농인가족 구성원과 청인가족 구성원은 서로 소통하고 싶은 욕구에 비해 실제적으로 거의 소통이 이루어지지 않고 있음을 발견 하였다. 또한 청인과 농인의 혼합가족들이 많은 어려움을 겪으면서도 수용과 이해를 통해 행복과 감사를 경험하고 있음도 발견하였다. 이러한 이해를 바탕으로 농인 가족의 원활한 상호작용과 소통의 증진을 위한 몇 가지 대안을 제시하였다.
Abstract
This ethnography explored interactions between deaf people and their families, in part with the intent to identify factors promoting functional relationships. Purposeful sampling was employed to identify people with hearing impairments, who were then closely surveyed with participant observation and in-depth interviews. Field notes of insiders’ perspectives were kept and outsiders’ views of the culture of the deaf were also noted and interpreted. The researchers found that families did not have as much of a relationship with their hearing impaired family member as they desired. Nevertheless, families with a deaf member delight in one another and know the blessing of family that comes through understanding and acceptance. Based upon these results, the authors put forth suggestions for how to grow healthy communication and relationships among the members of families of the deaf.
