Abstract

The scent of cosmetics plays an indispensable role in determining the consumer's acceptance of the product. Sensory tests can be divided into self-evaluation and expert evaluation. It is based on the evaluation through the senses of panelists or experts, and mainly statistically analyzes the information on the perceived variables. However, since sensory test is affected by factors such as physical condition and olfactory fatigue, reproducibility may be problematic. To compensate for this, a new device named POLFA applied with an E-nose sensor that can quantitatively evaluate fragrance was applied. Using these device, approximate concentrations of volatile components and fragrance strength can be estimated. In order to observe the usefulness of POLFA as a new method for measuring the intensity of fragrance, the existing sensory test, device evaluation using POLFA, and correlation between the two methods were analyzed. As a result of sensory test using EEMCO guidance and device evaluation using POLFA, statistically significant results were observed at all evaluation time points (before use, immediately after use, 5 min after use, 1 h after use, 2 h after use, 4 h after use, and 8 h after use). As a result of the correlation analysis between the sensory test and the measured value using the POLFA device, it was confirmed that there was a high correlation(R=0.854, p<0.01) between the two evaluation results. The new evaluation method using a device is meaningful as a tool that can compensate for the fact that the result of sensory test can be distorted by the panel's subjective judgment. In the future, it is expected to develop into a tool with ease of use, reproducibility, and accuracy through the accumulation of more data.
