Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of school club participation on Korean high school students’ academic and social self-concept using propensity score. Method: Data from the 3rd, 4th, and 6th year taken from the Korea Education Longitudinal Study(KELS) were analyzed using the Propensity Score Matching(PSM) method to increase causal inference as well as eliminate sample selection bias. Results: First, students’ individual characteristics, school-life characteristics as well as school characteristics were significantly related to their participation in school clubs. Second, after forming parallelized samples of club participation students and non-participation students and analyzing mean-difference in academic and social self-concept between two samples, the results showed that the level of both academic and social self-concept is higher for students who participated in clubs than those who did not. Conclusion: Based on these findings, we discussed the educational implications for effective interventions for promoting high school students’ club activities in school.
