Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine if bully-victims represent a unique subgroup that is qualitatively or quantitatively different from bullies or victims in terms of their social and emotional functions (SEFs). Method: Participants were 336 adolescent boys from 7 middles schools who completed the Korean version of Olweus Bullying Questionnaire and were categorized into one of 4 bullying subgroups (i.e., bullies, victims, bully-victims, no involvement). This study examined if bully-victims, compared to bullies and victims, had experienced various forms of bulling and victimization, characterized by power imbalance, intentionality, and repeatedness, more frequently over the last 2-3 months and demonstrated more problems in various social (i.e., shyness, unsociability, avoidance, and isolation) and emotional (i.e., social anxiety, depression, loneliness) functioning. Results: MANOVAs indicated that bully-victim adolescents had experienced certain forms of bullying and victimization more frequently but did not exhibited any evidence of qualitative or quantitative differences in terms of various SEFs. Further, the qualitative difference was not evidenced either in logistic regression analyses as there were no significant SEFs that uniquely predicted bully-victims. Conclusion: Our findings did not support the argument that bully-victim adolescents consist of an unique and qualitatively different subgroup, but rather implicated that their SEFs may be compromised by their relative power status in bulling dynamics. Other implications for educational practices and future research were fully discussed.
