Abstract

Purpose: The study aims to explore short-term changes in negative emotional behavior (i.e. attention deficit, aggression, social withdrawal and depression) and negative peer relationship and to examine the reciprocal effects of emotional behavior and peer relationship depending on the school level. Method: Reliable Change Index (RCI) analysis and a reciprocal effect model were utilized for elementary and middle school students from the Korean Children and Youth Panel Study 2018 (KCYPS 2018). Results: First, emotional behavior and peer relationship remained stable across two years. The levels of emotional behavior and peer relationship in the first year generally continued to the second year. Second, for elementary school cohort, emotional behavior and peer relationship at the previous time point significantly predicted each variable at the next time point but the two variables at the previous time point did not predict each other at the next time point. Third, for middle school cohort, emotional behavior and peer relationship at the previous time point significantly predicted each variable at the next time point. Moreover, emotional behavior at the previous time point significantly predicted peer relationship at the next time point and vice versa, showing the reciprocal effect. Conclusion and Discussions: The change in emotional behavior was relatively remarkable among elementary school students, and the reciprocal relationship between emotional behavior and peer relationship was significant among middle school students.
