Abstract
Purpose: This study examined the longitudinal measurement invariance of the Satisfaction With Life Scale (SWLS) and changes in latent means of life satisfaction, as well as its longitudinal stability across six waves (from 7th to 12th grade). Method: This study analyzed panel data from six waves (N=2,511) of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey 2018 (KCYPS 2018), conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute, in Korea. A longitudinal measurement invariance model (configural, metric, scalar, and residual invariance) allowing correlated residuals among identical items across time points were estimated using the MLR estimator in the lavaan package in R. The models were evaluated and compared based on robust fit indices and the ΔCFI criterion. Results: Configural, metric, and scalar invariance showed adequate fit. Standardized factor loadings ranged from .52 to .84, composite reliability (CR) ranged from .75 to .86, and average variance extracted (AVE) ranged from .38 to .55. Latent mean invariance was not supported, whereas the latent mean noninvariance model was supported. In this model, the latent mean at the first wave was fixed to zero, and others were freely estimated, revealing significant decreases over time (α₂= −.075, α₃= −.134, α₄= −.145, α₅ = −.208, α₆ = −.196; all ps < .001). The corresponding Cohen’s d values ranged from −.16 to −.45. Conclusion: The SWLS demonstrated configural, metric, and scalar invariance across time, supporting the validity of comparing latent means across six waves. The latent means of life satisfaction during adolescence gradually decreased from middle school to high school, and the longitudinal stability across one-year intervals showed moderate correlations. Considering this downward trend, school education should continuously monitor changes in life satisfaction and implement both preventive and supportive interventions.
