Abstract
This study analyzes the relation between urban scale and happiness index in prefecture-level cities in China. The happiness index consists of the following four categories: economic welfare, health life, education opportunity, and environment sanitation. Each category includes three low-grade indicators; hence, the happiness index consists of twelve low-grade indicators. This study uses AHP method, analyzes the weight, and conducts a consistency test. The relation between urban scale and happiness index shows U-type characteristics. With the increase in urban scale, the happiness index increases. In an urban population of 1-2 million, the happiness index is the lowest at 0.236; in 2-4 million, the happiness index is 0.238; in 4-6 million, it is 0.250; in 6-8 million, it is 0.261; in 8-10 million, it is 0.271, and in a population of above 10 million, the happiness index is as higher as 0.291. The results suggest important implications to the urban policy. China faces an increasing SOC demand and environmental pollution problems. This paper explores the growth potential of the urban population in China.
