Abstract
This paper is rooted in the question of whether the culture and arts could play a certain role in the sustainable development. The culture and arts in this study is claimed to have some contributions in a sustainable development by guiding the values which should be sought and encouraging the humanbeings to recognize the relationship with an environment. Through the review of works from Sacha Kagan who is a German philosopher of eco-aesthetics, it argues that the artistic sensibility might be extended into social responsibility as well as ecological ethics sensitivity. Due to this kind of possibility for expansion, the change in recognition that aims for a sustainable development will take place. Moreover, according to Dewey’s theory, the creation and appreciation of arts requires the interaction between actors and an environment. The expressed communication from these experiences is theoretically explained in terms of having a sphere in which various values are shared and embraced. Then, foreign cases that demonstrate the contribution of arts in the process of a sustainable society are presented. The cases can be seen as examples of changed awareness from the active interaction of arts with environments, local communities, and the public. To go hand in hand, a domestic case is also analyzed for the purpose of observing the similar possibility of arts. Specifically, the public arts project which has recently been taking place in Cheorwon of Gangwondo, Korea will be examined. Lastly, the paper concludes with the argument that the unidirectional relationship between arts and its related public polices hinders the ability of arts in a sustainable development as well as the suggestion that the local museums should perform the role of a mediator.
