도시의 문화적 기억 매체로서의 벽화: 리옹과 토니 가르니에의 경우

지역 문화유산의 보존이 가능한 것은 인류가 가진 기억 능력 덕분인데, 이러한 기억은 집단적 기억임과 동시에 문자, 그림, 몸, 장소 등의 기억 매체에 크게 의존하는 문화적 기억이다. 벽화는 직접적이고 대중성이 높은기억 매체여서 지역 문화유산의 보존과 이를 통한 문화적 정체성 강화나회복에 매우 효과적이라고 할 수 있다. 이러한 점에서 리옹(Lyon)의 공공 벽화들은 그 모범적 사례라 할 수 있다. ‘리옹인들의 프레스코’(Fresque des Lyonnais) 등 협동조합 시테 크레아시옹(Cité Création)의 작품들을분석해보면 리옹 공공 벽화의 내용이 온통 지역 문화유산들로 가득 차 있어서 그 목적이 지역의 문화적 정체성 보존에 있음을 알 수 있다. 또한 이작품들이 자연적 환경뿐만이 아니라 문화적 환경에까지 친화적이어서 리옹 공공 벽화의 기억 보존 방식은 한마디로 ‘생태적’이라고 할 수 있다. 토니 가르니에 도시박물관(Musée urbain Tony Garnier)의 사례는 도시의문화적 기억이라는 측면에서 여러 시사점을 보여준다. 그것은 기억의 보존과 안정을 위해서는 지속적이고 반복적인 기록 작업이 필요하고, 성공적 기억 보존에 있어 주민의 참여가 매우 중요하고, 벽화가 계속 유지되기위해서는 지속적 관리, 추가 작업, 개작이 필요하며, 벽화가 지역 활성화에크게 기여할 수 있다는 것이다
Abstract
The conservation of regional cultural heritages has been enabled by the human memory, and this memory is both a ‘collective’ and a ‘cultural’ memory which relies on its media such as letters, images, bodies and places. The mural paintings are very effective in the preservation of regional cultural heritages and in the strengthening or the recovery of cultural identities, because they are not only direct but also popular memory media. The public mural paintings of Lyon are exemplary cases. The works of the cooperative ‘Cité Création’ like the ‘Fresque des Lyonnais’ are filled with cultural heritages of the city, and this leads us to know that their purpose is to conserve cultural identities. The works are also ecological both in natural and in cultural environments. The case of the ‘Musée urbain Tony Garnier’ shows may implications in the aspect of the cultural memories of the city: constant and repetitive recordings are necessary for the conservation and the stabilization of memories; the residents’ participation is crucially important for the successful memory keeping; continuous cares, additional works and adaptations are necessary for the maintenance of mural paintings; they can contribute greatly to the regional revitalization.
