제20대 대통령 선거 운동에서 볼 수 있었던 종교적 이슈에 관한 이해: 유교와 무교적 전통을 중심으로

이 글은 유교적 가치와 이와 관련된 무교적 가치가 제20대 한국 대통령 선거기간 동안 어떻게 활용되고 적용되었는지 조명하며 그 이유와 배경에 관해 조명한다. 한국은 유교화 과정의 결과 중국과도 구별되는 한국식 유교 사회를 이루었다. 유교화의 목표에는 샤머니즘적 전통을 없애고, 샤머니즘이 국가의 공식 의례에 참석할 수 없도록 하는 일도 포함되었다. 그 결과, 유교적 전통은 무대 위에 등장하는 공식종교의 역할을 하고, 무교와 같은 민속종교는 무대 뒤에 존재하는 비공식적 종교의 임무를 수행하게 되었다. 이러한 유교와 샤머니즘의 공존은 근대 이후 한국 사회에 “이중구조”가 등장한 배경이 되었다. 이러한 결과로, 대통령 선거 유세 과정에서 유교 전통과 관련된 이슈는 유권자가 지켜야 하는 전통과 가치로 작동하고, 무속 전통은 그 반대로 작동했다. 절대 규범인 ‘이’는 지켜야 하는 것으로 받아들여지고, (탁한) ‘기’에 해당하는 샤머니즘은 ‘이’를 은폐하고 혼탁하게 만들 수 있다고 보고 공격당한 것이다. 바꿔 말하자면, 철저한 유교화 과정으로 한국인에게 체득된 유교적 가르침은 한국이라는 장에서 아비투스로서 작동하게 되었다. 그리고 유교적 전통을 통해 빚어진 무교에 관한 인식도 유교 아비투스와 관련된 결과물이라고 본다. 이러한 특징이 이번 대통령 선거기간에도 드러났고 “효과”를 발휘했다.
Abstract
This article sheds light on how Confucian and shamanistic values were used and applied during the 20th Korean presidential election and explains some reasons and backgrounds for doing so. As a result of Korea's Confucianization, it has formed a Korean-style Confucian society that is distinguished from China. The goal of Confucianization involved eliminating shamanistic traditions and preventing shamanism from attending the official ceremonies of the state. The Confucian tradition plays the role of the official religion on the stage, while shamanism has the task of the informal religion that exists behind the stage. This coexistence of Confucianism and shamanism has served as the background for the emergence of a “double structure” in Korean society since the modern era. As a result, during the presidential campaign, issues related to Confucian traditions acted as traditions and values that voters must uphold, while shamanistic traditions acted in the opposite way. In addition, ‘Li’, the absolute norm, is accepted as something to be observed, and shamanism, which corresponds to the (turbid) qi, is attacked because it can cover ‘li’ and make it cloudy. In other words, the Confucian teachings acquired by Koreans through Confucianization came to work as habitus in the field of Korea. Moreover, the perception of shamanism created through the Confucian tradition is considered the result of Confucian habitus. These characteristics were revealed during this presidential election.
