Abstract

The Catholic Church has been carrying out a Synodal reform in response to the phenomenon of de-religionization, an initiative initiated by Pope Francis within the framework of the 16th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops. This reform aims to reconcile two opposing propositions that seek to reform the church in a way that is consistent with secular values, such as postmodern pluralism, individualism, and democratic communal norms while simultaneously maintaining the Church's traditional values. In this context, this paper explores the characteristics of the de-religionization phenomenon that forms the background of the Synodal Movement, considering both the macro-society outside the Church and issues within it. In addition to the spread of secularization, atheism, and postmodern value discourse, the COVID-19 pandemic has created a crisis for institutionalized religion. Furthermore, the Catholic Church’s sexual abuse scandals, ethical perspectives that are out of touch with the collective consciousness of the times, and irrational Church management practices are identified as internal causes of de-religionization. In response to this de-religionization, the Catholic Church, through the Synodal Movement, seeks to foster innovation through the institutional reform of the Church structure and a redefinition of its religious mission. First, it seeks to introduce synodal decision-making norms that are equitable and procedurally rational, in order to transition to a democratic and egalitarian organizational culture while maintaining the priest-centered ecclesiastical tradition. To this end, it calls upon the theological concept of the People of God, which emphasizes the equality of all members within the Church, and seeks innovation in Church decision-making system, such as through pastoral councils. Second, from the perspective of religious mission, it expands the scope of the existing missionary tradition, emphasizing the social contribution and common good promoted by the Church. The Catholic Church is seeking a strategy to maintain its core teachings while spreading its religious mission through activities that promote the common good.
