한국의 무종교인에 대한 연구

이 연구에서는 최근 우리 사회에서 늘어나고 있는 무종교인들에 대한 통계 조사를 통하여 그 특징을 살펴보았다. 선행 연구들을 분석하여 무종교인들이 모두 종교성이 전혀 없는 사람들이 아니라는 것을 보여주었다. 이들은 나름대로의 종교성을 추구하고 있어서 이를 ‘무종교의 종교’라고 표현하기도 한다. 이것은 이번 통계 조사에서도 확인되었다. 곧 모두 무신론자이거나 완전히 세속적인 사람이 아니라는 것이다. 이들은 신의 존재를 적극적으로 부정하지도 않았다. 두 번째 특징은 이러한 종교성이 기존 종교나 제도 종교에 대한 관심이라기보다는 다양한 영적인 차원에 대한 관심이라는 것이다. 과거에 종교를 가졌다가 종교를 떠난 사람들은 가장 큰 이유로 ‘종교의 틀에 얽매이기 싫어서’라고 응답하여 조직화된 종교에 대한 호감은 높지 않은 것을 알 수 있다. 기성 종교나 제도 종교에는 큰 관심이 없지만 이와는 다른 ‘영적’이라는 단어에는 더 수용적인 태도를 보인다. 마지막으로 무종교인이 관심 갖는 종교성은 본질적인 종교성이라기보다는 비본질적인 종교성이라고 할 수 있다. 이들은 종교의 심리적, 정서적인 기능에는 어느 정도 동의를 하지만, 종교 본연의 기능이나 현실 문제 해결에는 별로 동의하지 않았다. 종교 행위를 통해 얻는 유익에 대해서도 심리적인 효과를 경험했다는 응답은 많았으나 종교의 본질적인 기능과 관련된 효과는 높지 않았다. 따라서 한국의 무종교인들은 본질적인 종교보다는 종교를 통한 심리적 평안을 추구하는 경향이 큰 것을 알 수 있다.
Abstract
In this study, the characteristics of the recently increasing number of the religiously unaffiliated people in our society were examined through a statistical survey. By analyzing previous studies, it was shown that not all religiously unaffiliated people are without religion. They are pursuing religion in their own way, so it is sometimes called ‘religion of no religion.’ This was also confirmed in this statistical survey. In other words, not all are atheists or completely secular. They do not actively deny the existence of God either. The second feature is that this kind of religiosity is not about having an interest in existing or institutionalized religions, but rather an interest in various spiritual dimensions. And those who had religion but left responded that they did not want to be bound by religious framework, indicating that their affinity for organized religion was not high. They are not very interested in established or institutional religions, but they are more receptive to the generalized meaning of the word ‘spiritual.’ Lastly, religiously unaffiliated people take interest not in the essentials of religion but rather, non-essentials of religions. They agree to a certain extent on the psychological and emotional functions of religion, but they do not agree with the proper functions of religion or solving real problems. Regarding the benefits of religious activities, many responded that they have experienced the psychological effects, but the effects related to the essential functions of religion were not high. Therefore, it can be seen that the religiously unaffiliated people in Korea are more inclined to pursue psychological peace achieved through religion than the essentials of religion itself.
