초록

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine recovery experiences of burn survivors who endured ongoing trauma and pain in adapting to social environments. Methods: Using van Manen’s hermeneutic phenomenological approach, each participant was purposefully selected. Data were collected through in-depth interviews(average time: 90 minutes) conducted in locations chosen by participants from June to August 2024. All recordings were transcribed verbatim. Data analysis followed van Manen’s methodology. This study was approved by our Institutional Review Board. Results: Six participants (age: 40~60 years) with mostly full-body burns suffered burn incidents over 10 years ago. Ten themes and 17 subthemes emerged, structured around four existential grounds: Body (-a body shattered beyond return), Space (-a narrowed living space, maturity achieved in an expanded horizon), Time (-the time of treatment shattered to pieces, the time of disappearance and survival, life moving along its winding path) and Others(-burn survivors who embrace each other’s wounds, family, both the driving force of life and its burden, the entangled gaze of others, and the fear and comfort given by the medical staff). Conclusion: Creating supportive environments for burn survivors is essential. Increased public awareness, mentorship programs, and policies to reduce financial burden of reconstructive surgeries through expanded aid and medical coverage are recommended.
