나라가 망할 때 항일투쟁의 방법 가운데 하나로 떠오른 것이 자정순국이다. 이는 자결하여 일제 침략과 통치에 항거한 것이다. 그 길을 택한 사람들은 보수유림들이었고, 척사론자들이었다. 자정순국자 70명 가운데 안동사람이 11명으로, 전국에서 가장 많다. 이 수치는 대의명분大義名分과 의리정신이 가장 강한 안동 유림의 성격을 보여준다. 자정순국자들의 신분은 양반이고, 관직을 지낸 인물들이 주류를 이루었다. 이들은 유력한 문중 출신이며, 서로 학맥과 혼인관계를 통해 연결되었다. 이들이 목숨을 끊은 시점은 대개 1910년 나라가 망한 직후이며, 방법은 단식이 가장 많았다. 이들이 내세운 논리는 의리 지키기였다. 국가와의 의리, 국왕과의 의리가 그 핵심이다. 이들은 일제의 침략이 잘못된 것이며 결코 받아들일 수 없다고 선언하고, 또 일제의 침략이 여기에서 멈추지 않고 자멸을 불러들일 것이라고 경고하기도 했다. 그러면서 이들은 동포들에게 항쟁을 촉구하고 나섰다. 자정순국은 단순한 자살이 아니다. 이것은 일제 침략과 통치에 대한 투쟁이자, 신념을 지키는 길이요, 독립운동사에서 가장 강렬한 투쟁방법이었다.
Abstract
The martyrdom for Nation of Neo-confucian scholars in Andong was one of the strongest resistants against Japanese occupation. People who committed it were mostly conservative neo-confucian scholars, and were rejectors against heterodoxy. Among 70 martyrs in Korea, 11 were from Andong. This shows their allegiance and fidelity toward the country. Martyrs of Andong were mostly nobles who was in charge of government. They are from very renowned clan and was connected to each other by academical and marital relations. The period of their martyrdom was mostly right after the fall of the country(1910), and fasting was taken for the major method. The logic that led them was 'keeping the obligation'. Obligation toward the country and the Emperor was the point. They pronounced that the Japanese invasion was totally wrong and unacceptable, and also warned that the Japanese invasion wouldn't stop and it is meant to bring disasters. Moreover, they have encouraged all the Koreans to fight against the Japanese imperialism. Martyrdom for Nation is not a common suicide. It was the method to fight against the Japanese occupation, a resistance to keep their faith, and was the most intense voice of protest.
