Abstract
『Worinseokbo』 is a book printed by woodblocks in 1459 (the fifth year of King Sejo). King Sejong ordered his son, Suyang Degun (King Sejo) to create 『Seokbosangjeol』 and Suyang Degun finished creating it in July, 1447, which was 8 months after proclaiming the creation of Hangeul. King Sejong referred to 『Seokbosangjeol』 and created 『Worincheongangjigok』. 『Worinseokbo』 was a book created by re-editing 『Worincheongangjigok』. 『Worinseokbo』 was estimated to be composed of 25 volumes. However, only the contents of 26 books including the first edition and the middle edition existed. On the twenty first of November, 2013, quite a few old books and old documents were found in the abdomen of the statue of Inwang (the Deva King) and Siwang in the JijangJeon of Gangheungsa(temple) located at Japum-Ri, Seohu-Myeon, Andong-Si. These were estimated to be built in 1692. Many of these books were valuable materials relevant to Hangeul. They reflected a notation for Hangeul right after its creation and can be considered as national treasures. The reason why lots of materials relevant to Hangeul were found in Gangheungsa was that a learned priest of the early Joseon Dynasty, Sinmi and Hakjo had a particular connection with Gangheungsa. Two learned priests of the early Joseon Dynasty, Sinmi(1403~1479) and Hakjo(1431~1514) participated in the creation of these materials. They gained solid trust from the royal family. Particularly, Hakjo who came from Andong started his career as a priest from Hakga Mountain. Afterwards, they kept in touch with Gangheungsa. A total of four books of 『Worinseokbo』Volume 7, 8, and 21 (two books) were found there. In particular, the contents of volume 21 were estimated to be those of the first edition and two kinds of the middle edition produced in 1542 were found together. 『Worinseokbo』Volume 21 was found in five buddhist statues. An imprint of it was missing. Of a total of 222 chapters, chapter1 through 6 and chapter 214 through 219 were missing. However, the condition of the remains were very good and the form was consistent with that of the first edition of the other volumes. The chinese character notation of the book firmly complied to the rules of 『Donggukjeongun』 and its side dots were very different from those of the middle editions. The middle editions of 『Worinseokbo』Volume 21 have been known to have four kinds so far. The newly found material estimated to be the first edition was surmised to be used as a rough draft for the middle edition made in Gangheungsa (1542). This fact was revealed through the general shape of letters and a notation form of a final consonant. Consequently, it was surmised that this book was used as the woodblock draft when the middle edition was produced in Gangheungsa in 1542. In addition, it was surmised that the method of inlay engraved on the woodblock was used at that time.
