Abstract

This paper aims to review a possibility of restoring Vols. 2 (中卷) and 3 (下卷) of Wolincheongangjigok which have not been found yet, from Seokbosangjeol and Wolinseokbo. Wolincheongangjigok was a song written by King Sejong in praise of the virtues of Shakyamuni after Grand Prince Suyang wrote Seokbosangjeol in 1447 (Sejong 29) in memory of Queen Soheon as per the king’s order. Along with Yongbieocheonga, it is the oldest (最古) record written in ‘Hunminjeongeum’ in the history of the Korean language. Currently, only its Vol. 1 (上卷), which was found in 1914, is available while its Vols. 2 and 3 have not been discovered. Thus, its entire scale can be only conjectured by combining the version with missing pages (落張本) inserted in Seokbosangjeol and the version contained in Wolinseokbo. For the text of Wolincheongangjigok, there are currently 194 songs from Gi-1 to Gi-194 in its Vol. 1, and 15 songs from Vol. 6 (12 in Gi-145 to Gi-154 and Gi-174 to Gi-175), Vol. 9 (2 in Gi-254 to Gi-255), and Vol. 13 (1 in Gi-275) of Seokbosangjeol. In Wolinseokbo, there currently remain 377 songs and the latter half (後節) of Gi-260. In summary, among an estimated total of 583 songs (全曲), there are no lyrics for 65 songs: 9 songs from Gi-303 to Gi-311 (Vol. 16 of Wolinseokbo has not been found) and 56 songs from Gi-520 to Gi-576 (Vol 24. Of Wolinseokbo has not been found). Hence, 518 songs currently exist today for Songs of the Moon’s Reflection on a Thousand Rivers. There is no difficulty to reorganize and restore Vols. 2 and 3 of Wolincheongangjigok as there is not much change in content except for some problem with Sino-Korean and native Korean writing sequences in Wolinseokbo, differences with the writing system for Sino-Korean characters’ final sounds and ‘ㄹㆆ’. We need to consider, however, that some volumes of Wolinseokbo have not yet been found, or some discovered versions include damaged parts. As a premise to restore the text, it is necessary to review whether there is any lyrical blank (曲次) between Vol. 1 Wolincheongangjigok and existing lyrics in Wolinseokbo and then discuss whether it is justifiable to use volumes of Wolinseokbo to fill up the lyrical blanks. Furthermore, we need to take into account why there is one more song even though Gi-177 to Gi-195 in Vol. 7 of Wolinseokbo have the same content as Gi-176 to Gi-194 in Vol. 1 of Wolincheongangjigok, whether Gi-583 in Vol. 25 of Wolinseokbo is the end, some differences in each lyric, the text’s narrative structure, and connections with underlying texts (底經). Wolincheongangjigok in Wolinseokbo reflects the original single versions (單券本) of Wolincheongangjigok written by King Sejong himself without much change except for its writing rules at that time. For Vols. 4 and 22 of Wolinseokbo, which are only available in copied versions, most differences between original and copied versions are about typos, missing words or some other writing system; it substantiates that the songs’ lyrics had not been changed dramatically.
