조선후기의 많은 사료들을 살펴보면, ‘서북지역에는 사족이 없다’라는 인식이 서울을 중심으로 한 지배 세력들 사이에서 널리 공유되고 있었음을 알 수 있다. 그런데, 실제로 서북지역의 지배 세력들도 다른 지역의 사족들이 향유하고 있었던 것과 동일한 수준의 문화나 가치관을 향유함으로써, 스스로를 사족이라고 인식해왔다. 동시에, 다른 지역의 사족과 마찬가지로, 한편으로는 중앙 정치로 진출하기 위해 부단한 노력을 기울이면서, 다른 한편으로는 지역 사회를 이끌어 왔던 것이다. 본 논문은 서북지역 가운데서도, 당시 서울에 버금가는 수준의 상업/문화의 중심지였던 평양의 지배세력에 대해서, 이들이 남긴 자료 및 문과 방목 등의 사료를 분석하여, 평양 사족의 형성 및 그 발전과정을 살펴 보고자 한다. 평양 사족의 정체성과 이들이 행한 문화적 관행이 다른 지역의 경우와 어떻게 유사하고, 또 차별되는가를 살펴봄으로써, 근대 격변기 이전의 평양 사족의 역사적 위치를 검토하고자 한다.
Abstract
There are rich documentations from late Chosŏn period showing that the leading elites of the Chosŏn dynasty in and out of Seoul had shared a view that there was no sajok in the northern region of Korea. Yet, regional elites of the northern region had made constant attempts to participate in the central court and at the same time to control their own local society while solidifying their sajok identities by practicing the same sajok culture and values that the sajok of other areas espoused. This paper aims to illuminate the emergence and evolution of the sajok elite groups in P’yŏngyang, which was the center of various cultural and commercial activies next to Seoul, by examining some primary sources left by the regional elites of P’yŏngyang, together with other sources such as civil service examination rosters. An analysis of P’yŏngyang sajok idendities and their cultural practices in comparison to those of other areas enhances our understanding of their historical place right before Korea went through the tumultuous modern transformation.
