해창 송기식의 교육활동과 독립운동

본 논문은 독립유공자 해창海窓 송기식宋基植(1878~1949)의 교육활동과 독립운동에 대해 연구한 것이다. 동서양의 학문을 두루 섭렵한 해창은 1909년 자신이 설립한 봉양의숙鳳陽義塾과 1925년에 설립한 인곡서당麟谷書堂, 그리고 1932년 경기도 시흥에 있는 녹동서원鹿洞書院에서의 후학양성을 통해 조국의 광복을 도모하자고 하였다. 이에 더해 해창은 유교의 종교화를 이루기 위해 『유교유신론儒敎維新論』을 저술하고 기독교 등의 주일 예배 방식을 모방해 복일復日 제도를 도입하고자 하였다. 이는 단순 유교의 종교화 활동을 넘어 모임이 금지된 현실 타개책으로 합법적 모임이 가능한 복일 제도를 활용해 독립의 필요성은 물론 인간의 평등사상 등에 대한 계몽 교육까지 실시하고자 한 것이다. 그 사이 해창은 1919년 3월 18일 안동에서 벌어진 만세 시위를 주도한 혐의로 2년형을 선고받고 옥고를 치렀다. 해창의 독립운동 또한 표면적으로는 3.18 안동 만세 시위로 옥고를 치르고 나온 후 끝났지만, 그의 독립운동은 교육과 저술 및 유교의 종교화를 통해 비폭력 저항운동의 방향에서 더욱 굳건해졌다. 한마디로 해창에게 있어 교육활동과 독립운동은 선후 관계가 아닌 불가분의 관계이다.
Abstract
This paper is about Hae-chang Ki-Sik Song(1878~1949)’s educational and independent activities. Hae-chang who studied both of eastern and western aspects, planned to independent with well educated disciples through Bong-yang Uisuk and In-kok Seodang set by himself in 1909 and 1925 and Nok-dong Seowon in Siheung, Gyeonggi-do in 1932. Plus, Hae-chang wrote 『Yugyo-yusin theory』 to turn the Confucianism into religion. He also introduced the system of Bok-il by imitating the way of Sunday worship as Christianity. In the times when private gatherings are prohibited, he aimed to not only turn the Confucianism into religion but also do patriotic enlightenment educations for egalitarianism and necessity of independence using Bok-il system which makes legal meetings are possible. In the meantime, he was sentenced to two years in prison on charge of leading an independent protest on An-dong, March 18, 1919. His independent activities on the surface were over after the 2 years in the prison, but his independent movements get more stronger in the way of nonviolent resistances through educations, writings and religious Confucianism. For Hae-chang, educational and independent activities were inseparable.
