Abstract
This paper presents comparison and examination results on the orientations and characteristics of study of Confucian classics between Lee Hwang and Jo Shik in the history of study of Confucian classics during the former half of Joseon. The major findings were as follows:In the former half of Joseon, interpretations of Confucian classics were completed with Gugyeols and accompanied by various commentaries during the reign of King Sejo. Reading various types of commentaries, Lee Hwang made his own commentaries on the Four Books and the Three Classics to confirm the established theories. In the researches on the study of Confucian classics during the former half of Joseon, Gwon Geun made a starting point and Lee Eon-jeok, Lee Hwang and Jo Shik created a new turning point in the approximately 16th century. Lee Eon-jeok independently invented Uiri and posed a theory of revising Daehakjanggu ; Lee Hwang put together the commentaries on the Four Books and the Three Classics and created Jeongan; and Jo Shik combined the Four Books with Igyeong and did inclusive interpretations focused on the cultivation of mind. Lee and Jo shared some homogeneity in that both of them sought after the doctrines of sages and were engrossed in reading the Four Books and Neo-Confucian classics as Neo-Confucian scholars. It is also true that they demonstrated their own individualities in the background of growth, perceptions of the times, ways of conducting themselves in the world, state examinations and government positions, and academic tendencies. While Lee first read Jujadaejeon at the age of 43 and since depended on it and Zhu Xi's variorum edition of the Four Books, Jo widely accepted Neo- Confucianism through Seongridaejeon and other books, not reading it. As for academic tendencies, Lee focused on true knowledge and practice, whereas Jo put a priority on academic contributions to society and practice. While Lee analyzed the theory of Jega and precisely exhibited Uiri, Jo sublated Gangron and Byeonseok and chose to practice courageously. Accepting the theories of Zhu Xi, Lee placed importance on the Four Books. He especially valued Daehak, regarding it as the Hakjasa of Sushinipdeok and fundamental book of Jonshimchulchi. He pursued analytical interpretations with a focus on the precise understanding of the main purports, which was a trend based on the study of Confucian classics with a focus on Myeongdo. Jo also placed importance on the Four Books, especially cherishing Daehak and Jungyong. At the same time, he maintained an inclusive perspective, putting importance on Juyeok and Seogyeong, which contain a lot of useful mentions about the cultivation of mind among the Five Classics, as well. He also put an emphasis on self-complacency to see through the earth, academic contributions to society, and practice, which is an orientation toward Haengdo based on the study of Confucian classics. Lee's characteristics in the study of Confucian classics are well illuminated in Seonghakshipdo with his focus on Jae3sohakdo and Jae4daehakdo. That is, he found inseparable connections between Sohak and Daehak and figured them out as Seongshiseongjong. While Zhu Xi understood Daehak as the doctrines of Sugichiin, Lee saw it as the essence of Jonshimchulchi and thought that it had more political nature than moral training. His study of Confucian classics was based on the teachings of Zhu Xi, which indicates that he put a priority on Jido before Haengdo according to Zhu Xi's theory of Seonjihuhaeng. When the logic of Ji, Haeng, and Chuhaeng in Daehak was considered, it seemed that Jo's study of Confucian classics focused on Haeng. His characteristics in the study of Confucian classics are found in Seongdo and Yeokseohakyongeomaengildodo in Hakgiryupeyon and also Mujinbongsa in the anthology. Mujinbongsa is based on the logical grounds such as Myeongseon and Seongshin in Jungyong. Seongdo was created by focusing on Seong that was the Daeji of Jungyong and extracting concerned phrases from Daehak and Juyeok. Yeokseohakyongeomaengildodo was created by extracting concerned phrases from Seogyeong, Juyeok, and the Four Books in order to obtain Seong. The essential characteristic of Jo in the study of Confucian classics lies in his pursuit of Seong of Jungyong. Lee's study of Confucian classics focuses on Sohak and Daehak as demonstrated in Seonghakshipdo and is characterized by a greater emphasis on Ji and Haeng than Chuhaeng. Jo's study of Confucian classics, on the other hand, is based on the cultivation of Indo and its incorporation into Seong that is Cheondo as demonstrated in Seongdo and Yeokseohakyongeomaengildodo. While Lee's study of Confucian classics is accompanied by Jido and Haengdo, that of Jo places importance only on Haengdo. Lee's study of Confucian classics takes Sohak and Daehak as Souigeyongseo, whereas that of Jo takes Jungyong as Souigeyongseo and integrates the Four Books, Juyeok, and Seogyeong.
