한문 고전 번역 과정에서 난해한 典故라던가 원전을 截取하여 활용한 경우, 그리고 역사적인 배경과 해당 학문 분야에 대한 학술적 성취를 제대로 이해하지 못하면 완벽한 번역을 기대할 수 없다. 편지글과 한시 등의 번역에서 작자의 독특한 체험에서 나온 구절과 어휘 등도 제대로 된 번역이 쉽지 않다. 뿐만 아니라, 이국의 기행 체험을 기록한 한문 고전을 번역할 경우, 지명과 인명, 異文化 같은 숱한 難解處를 만나거나, 자연 과학 분야와 기술 분야, 그리고 음악이나 의학서와 같은 특수한 전문 분야를 번역할 경우에도 漢文 文理로 해결할 수 없는 경우 또한 많다. 이러한 사례들이 한문 고전 번역의 특수성이다.
Abstract
There are many obstacles faced by those who aspire correct translation of hanmun(classical Chinese) literature, including not only obtuse references and edited quotations of the text, but also insufficient understanding of the text in its historical background, scholarly expertise, and genre characteristics on the part of the translator. The phrases and words in private letters and poems based on the author’s esoteric experiences are also a challenge. Moreover, in case of travel records of foreign land, geographical and biographical names as well as unique foreign culture pose another challenge. Specialized fields like music and medicine require special knowledge beyond the lingual ability (mulli) to understand hanmun texts. All these obstacles and difficulties constitute a challenge specific to the translation of hanmun literature, to be overcome to produce the correct and readable translation to be enjoyed by the public.
