Abstract
This study seeks to conduct a wide-ranging examination of the effects exerted by Korean housewife consumers’ susceptibility to the reference group and ethnocentrism on their cognitive dissonance and willingness to buy foreign-made home appliances following their purchase of home appliances. The purpose of this study also concerns an investigation of the mediating effects of the cognitive dissonance consumers experience after purchasing home appliances on their purchase intent to foreign products and a reviewing of comprehensive causal relationships of Korean housewife consumers’ high involvement buying decisions. The findings of this study are intended to provide academic and practical implications for the purpose of forming consumer-oriented marketing strategies under the current market conditions in which consumers increasingly choose to buy imported brand-name home appliances in the wake of Korea’s Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with its trade partners entering into force and of high-end brand strategies implemented by the nation’s home appliance makers. For the study, a national survey was conducted on 1044 housewife consumers living in Korea. The survey findings were analyzed on the basis of structural equation modeling (SEM). The findings and implications of this study are as follows. First, the housewife consumers’ post-purchase cognitive dissonance was shown to increase as their susceptibility to the reference group’s normative influence (SNI) grew stronger but was not significantly affected by their susceptibility to the reference group’s information influence (SII). In other words, even with high consumer susceptibility to product information, the degree of their cognitive dissonance rose following their purchase, when susceptibility to normative influence became more intense. In addition, a follow-up analysis showed cognitive dissonance to partially mediate normative influence on imported product purchase. Second, despite the presence of potent consumer ethnocentrism, the consumers’ preference for foreign-made products and willingness to purchase them intensified as their normative susceptibility grew higher. Furthermore, their susceptibility to normative influence was shown to increase as their susceptibility to information influence became more acute. Third, regarding high involvement product purchasing behavior, the consumers’ desire to satisfy their new needs was found to enhance a connection between the reference group’s informative influence and its normative influence. However, under the circumstances involving the wear and tear of existing products, the connection between the two influences was shown to be further reinforced. The consumers’ susceptibility to the reference group’s information influence was shown to not increase their willingness to buy imported products. In contrast, increases in their purchase intent to foreign products were shown to ensue as they experienced stronger cognitive dissonance after purchasing home appliances. It should be noted that those who searched for large amounts of information, in particular, exhibited a stronger willingness to buy imported products. The overall implication of these findings is that, although today’s consumers show their support for domestically made home appliances in making a rational judgment involving a high degree of information susceptibility, they react favorably to imported products in making a normative judgment while experiencing cognitive dissonance. Therefore, it is important for domestic companies to consistently provide product information to housewife consumers at the time of formulating marketing strategies and to mount trade-in campaigns and convey a variety of new product information through means enabling the formation of normative influence, including SNS, in particular, for those with home appliances about to wear out or in need of replacement.
