이 연구는 식민지 시기 조선의 신극 운동과 그 안에서 실천적 예술가로 활동한 주영섭의 연극 활동을 재조명하는 데 목적이 있다. 특히 보성전문학교 재학 시절 고리키 원작 ｢밤주막｣ 공연 참여를 통해 드러나는 그의 연극적 사유의 기원을 고찰하고, 동경 유학기 동경학생예술좌 창립과 자작 희곡 ｢나루｣의 발표 및 연출을 중심으로 민중 서사의 형성 과정을 분석하였다. 주영섭의 ｢나루｣는 조선 농촌의 몰락, 청년의 좌절, 인신매매라는 사회 현실을 담아낸 리얼리즘 희곡으로, 그가 민중의 현실을 연극적 언어로 형상화하고자 한 의도를 잘 보여 준다. 더불어 이 연구는 ｢밤주막｣과 ｢나루｣ 사이의 구조적, 주제적 유사성을 통해 주영섭 창작의 연속성과 변용 양상을 추적하였다. 이를 통해 주영섭은 단순한 극작가가 아닌, 조선 신극 운동의 사상과 미학을 실천한 인물로 평가되며, 그의 연극 활동은 당시 민중 서사의 형성과 조선 근대 연극사의 복합성을 이해하는 데 중요한 단서를 제공한다.
Abstract
This study aims to re-examine the theatrical activities of Ju Yeong-seop, a practitioner-artist active in the modern Korean theater movement during the Japanese colonial period. Focusing on his participation in the performance of Gorky’s The Lower Depths while attending Boseong College, the study explores the origin of Ju’s theatrical thought. It further analyzes the formation of his narrative of the people through the establishment of the Tokyo Student Art Troupe during his study in Japan and the production and direction of his original play Naru. The play Naru depicts the collapse of rural communities in colonial Korea, the despair of youth, and the issue of human trafficking, embodying Ju’s attempt to represent the reality of the people through theatrical language. Moreover, this study traces the structural and thematic similarities between The Lower Depths and Naru, revealing the continuity and transformation of Ju’s creative orientation. As such, Ju Yeong-seop should be evaluated not merely as a playwright but as a practitioner who implemented the ideals and aesthetics of the Korean modern theater movement. His theatrical practice provides critical insights into the formation of people’s narratives and the complex layers of modern Korean theater history.
