Abstract

The one who recorded Samgukyusa(三國遺事) was Ilyeon(一然), one of the representative monks of the Goryeo Dynasty. Ilyeon recorded a total of ten parts related to Wonhyo(元曉), a monk of the Silla Dynasty, in Samgukyusa. This shows that Ilyeon highly regarded Wonhyo’s status and influence. Through the three stories that are closely related to Mahayana Buddhism out of the ten records, we can read that the stories Ilyeon recorded were not just simple stories but contained the essence of deep Buddhist thought. The story of the woman harvesting rice awakens us to the essential limitations of language and the bias of consciousness. The story of the tomb warns us about the vanity of consciousness built by memory and learning, showing that we should pursue qualitative changes in human consciousness. The story of the cow’s horn shows that we can believe that each of us has the potential to realize something, and that we can rely on it to advance toward enlightenment.
