金長生의 『喪禮備要』가 조선후기 禮學史에 끼친 영향

Abstract

This paper aims to examine how Kim Jang-saeng's Sangnyebiyo(『喪禮備要』) influenced the history of late Joseon’s ritual studies(禮學). So the critical aspects and the trends of honor & transmission and complementation are examined based on the literary collections of various Joseon scholars. On the level of criticism, Joseon scholars argued about the problem who is the original author of Sangnyebiyo(『喪禮備要』), but later generation scholars gradually agreed that the original author is Kim Jang-saeng. Also Southern-faction scholars pointed out some questionable parts in the book, or criticized its compilation system. On the level of honor & transmission or complementation, some Joseon scholars appointed the book Sangnyebiyo(『喪禮備要』) as a must-read book or the standard of proprieties; the scholars Jeong Jung-gi and Yi Jae compiled another book on rites to supplement the absence of customs and weddings in the book Sangnyebiyo; the scholar Park Geon-jung, while preserving the original structure of Sangnyebiyo, mobilized a volume of data and focused on identifying the meanings and correct origins of diverse concepts including rites, ritual tools and costumes, which led him to compile a comprehensive book, titled Sangnyebiyobo(『喪禮備要補』), which features admonition, historial research and exposition. Park also compiled a brief book, titled Biyochoeyakjohae(『備要撮略條解』) to release the inconvenience the massive could cause. Meanwhile, Sangnyebiyo 『喪禮備要』 was recognized for its excellence in historical research regardless of party affiliation, and when a mourning occurs in the country, it It was ranked as one to be referred to along with Garye(『家禮』), Daemyeongyul(『大明律』), Gukjojooryeui(『國朝朝五禮儀』), etc. In this way, Sangnyebiyo(『喪禮備要』) was published several times throughout the late Joseon period; as a result, there was no one, even in rural villages, who did not own this book. As a result, Sangnyebiyo firmly maintained its status as a historical document of funeral rites until the end of the 19th century.
