Abstract

This study aims to analyze the patterns of lamentation and religious implications in the elegies composed by Jeungsan, Kang Il-sun (甑山 姜一淳, 1871-1909) during the late-19th century, a tumultuous period marked by imperialist aggression and national sovereignty crisis in modern Korean history. The research focuses on the elegies composed for the two key figures, Choe Ik-hyeon (崔益鉉, 1833-1907) and Min Yeong-hwan (閔泳煥, 1861-1905), recorded in Jeongyeong (『典經』). This paper first examines Jeungsan’s perspective on the patriotic spirit and national suffering embodied in the above two figures, Choe and Min, who died for their country. And it explores how their deaths are connected to the ‘resolution of grievances’ (Haewon, 解冤), a core tenet of Jeungsan’s thought. Based on this analysis, the study proceeds to identify the multi-layered nature of Jeungsan’s elegies and elucidates their religious implications within his thought system, so-called the ‘Reordering Works of Heaven and Earth’ (Cheonjigongsa, 天地公事), which seek transition from mutual contention (Sanggeuk, 相克) to mutual beneficence (Sangsaeng, 相生). The findings confirm that Jeungsan’s elegies, more than a literary form, are crucial texts that acknowledge the pain and value of sacrifice in a rapidly changing era, connecting these historical events to his unique religious worldview. This framework allowed him to offer a critical perspective on the chaotic times while also presenting a vision of hope for the Later World (Hucheon, 後天). Ultimately, Jeungsan’s elegies are a philosophical product reflecting his profound empathy for human life and death, and his sense of calling to guide the course of history through the lives and spirits of historical figures.
