Abstract

Kecak is a performance from the island of Bali, sometimes called ‘the Last Paradise on earth.’ It is a stereotypical case of cultural constructivism in the context of tourism. By using the structural frame and method of Claude Lévi-Strauss, this paper analyzes the Ramayana(Hindu, Balinese, and as depicted in Kecak) and then examines the contextualization of Kecak, that is the process of its hybridization, reconstruction and transformation in the context of tourism. Since the 1920s Ramayana depicted in Kecak has been hybridized with other Balinese ritual elements in the context of tourism. Its narrative contents have also been reconstructed and transformed so as to maximize ‘spectacle’ elements and dramatic effects to support ‘cultural tourism.’ Such contextualizations are attributed to the Balinese creative responses to tourism chasing after and consuming the image of an ‘authentic’ Balinese culture. Today, Kecak still remains a Balinese performance art representing, to a great extent, Balinese ritual symbolism as well as the narrative contents and structural elements of the Ramayana, although it is recognized as ‘touristic culture’ as well. Therefore, this paper argues that the contextualization of Kecak should be understood in relation to the internal dynamics of syncretic Balinese culture, rather than in terms of ‘Orientalism-oriented globalization’ or ‘touristic culture.’
