이 연구의 목적은 태국의 1992년 민주화 이후 전개된 일련의 정치과정을 분석하고, 민주주의로의 이행과 공고화과정에 영향을 미치는 주요 요인들을 고찰하여 그 성공과 실패 원인을 규명하는데 있다. 태국의 1992년 민주화 이후 전개된 일련의 정치과정은 우리에게 많은 교훈을 준다. 1992년 민주화 이후 태국의 민주주의로의 이행과 공고화과정은 결국 실패하였다. 태국의 민주주의 이행과 공고화과정에서 주요 행위자로서 정치리더십과 시민사회 사이의 관계를 통해 표출되는 사회적 혼란과 정치적 불안정은 결국 두 차례의 쿠데타 발생으로 이어지며 권위주의체제로 회귀하는 모습을 보여주었다. 민주주의로의 이행과 공고화과정에서 태국의 정치변동은 정치리더십과 시민사회 사이에서 민주주의가 수립되어 정착되기까지 무엇이 가장 중요한 과제이며, 또 무엇이 민주주의 공고화를 어렵게 만드는지 보여주고 있다. 이에 따라 이 연구는 기존의 민주주의에 관한 이론적 논의에 근거하여 태국의 민주주의로의 이행과 민주주의 공고화과정을 분석하고, 그 성공과 좌절 원인을 설명하였다.
Abstract
The purpose of this research is to review the political process after 1992 democratization in Thailand, and to research about success and failure factors of democratic transition and consolidation. Change of political process after democratization in Thailand is give us many lessons. After all, democratic consolidation of Thailand failed because of social confusion and political instability between political leadership and civil society and two military coups. After 1992 democratization, Thai political process in democratic transition and consolidation was very confused because of a series of political leader’s corruption scandals and authoritarian leadership. And also, military coup occurred two time in 2006 and 2014. And then, Thai political process returned to authoritarian regime form democratic regime. In according to this, this study is to explore the mutual relation of political leadership and civil society in political process after democratization, and to analyze the cause of success and failure of democratic consolidation.
