Abstract
This study analyzed the changes that occurred in intra-industry trade between ASEAN countries and Korea for the last 10 years since 2007 when the Korea-ASEAN FTA took effect. Specifically, the quantitative and qualitative changes of intra-industry trade were classified, and a dynamic analysis was conducted in relation to the industrial adjustment issues of rearrangement of production factors and resources induced by trade changes. Overall, in quantitative changes, it appears that, on the national average, intra-industry type changes occurred more than inter-industry type changes. However, if you look at changes by industry, it can be seen that inter-industry type changes occurred more than intra-industry type changes. And the shape and size of industrial adjustment pressures have varied widely between countries as well as between industries. In terms of qualitative changes, the average of the relative quality level of exports versus imports rose in Malaysia, while it fell in Indonesia and Thailand, and remained almost unchanged in Vietnam and the Philippines. In addition, it appears that the quality comparative advantage of export products has changed from country to country with not small deviations between industries. It can be seen that qualitative change also shows various patterns depending on the country and industry. The analysis results of this study in the manufacturing sector indicate that there is not a small variation among ASEAN countries in the shape and magnitude of adjustment pressures in each industry due to trade changes. And also it can be said that in recent years, the intra-industry trade between ASEAN countries and Korea has changed in many ways, not only between industries but also between countries. This is quite different from the expectation that ASEAN countries would have many similarities in the overall economic environment.
