Abstract
This study empirically analyzed the nonlinear relationship between the stock market and the bond market in Korea using the NARDL bounds testing approach with weekly data from January 2000 to March 2024. To examine the impact of major global events such as the global financial crisis and the pandemic on the relationship between the two markets, the analysis period was divided into five segments: pre-global financial crisis, during the global financial crisis, post-global financial crisis, during the pandemic, and post-pandemic. The empirical analysis revealed that increased volatility in the U.S. financial market has a long-term negative impact on the domestic stock market, and the long-term substitutive relationship between the domestic stock market and bond markets ceased to existed following the global financial crisis. Furthermore, these changes in the relationship between the two capital markets are more pronounced during periods of heightened uncertainty. These findings suggest that, given the weakened perception of bonds as safe assets, policy efforts are needed to enhance the functionality and reliability of the domestic bond market. Furthermore, in a environment of increased uncertainty, fiscal policies must play a crucial role in ensuring the stable development and strengthening of capital market functions. Investors are advised to minimize risk by constructing flexible portfolios based on changes in the relationship between the two capital markets.
