Abstract
This paper focuses on the regional migration of Korean regional youth in 20s. I examined through qualitative interviews why some people move to other regions and others stay, and how their lives unfold afterward depending on whether they move. The results of the interviews with 17 young people in their 20s from regional areas are as follows. The main reason for moving to Seoul is job. Some people moved voluntarily because of the variety of jobs and opportunities in Seoul and their romantic notion of Seoul, but others moved because they wanted to live in the region but could not find a suitable job. Some respondents planned to return to their hometown after gaining a lot of experience and learning in Seoul for several years. The main reasons for staying in the region are economic costs, loneliness in a foreign place, and the desire to be close to their family. It shows that there are many factors that influence the decision to move to a region, and there are various cases even when moving to Seoul. In life after moving, there were differences in economic, cultural, lifestyle, and thoughts on marriage. Even in the same profession, Seoul has a higher annual salary and higher salary increase rate. However, it is better to save money in the provinces due to monthly rent and cost of living. Cultural life in Seoul is much better than in the provinces in terms of diversity and opportunities, which in turn creates differences in their life experiences. Life in Seoul is described as competitive, busy, and intense, which results in no peace of mind. Therefore, it is difficult to think about marriage in reality. on top of that, high housing price in Seoul hinders people from thinking about marriage. On the other hand, life in the provinces is described as stable, leisurely, and comfortable. In the regional areas, there is an atmosphere of living according to a set framework like the parents' generation, which makes marriage favorable. In addition, the possibility of actually being able to buy a house and receiving help from parents when raising children are important factors when considering marriage. Compared to native Seoul residents, some of the respondents living in Seoul felt an invisible wall, recognizing the difference from the starting point, such as the fact that they are behind in resources and information, and having to pay living expenses and monthly rent. They also felt difficult to become close with native Seoul residents, and experienced the dilemma of being an outsider in Seoul. This study reveals the various causes and types of migration, the differences in outcomes depending on whether or not they migrate, and the dilemmas felt by those who migrate to Seoul.
