Abstract

This study examines the reasons behind the postponement of residential independence among regional youth and to reveal the specific patterns that emerge when this postponement intersects with the individual’s socioeconomic status and gender. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with 17 young adults living with their families of origin in Daejeon, and the collected qualitative data were analyzed. The analysis found that, first, regional youth increasingly perceive economic stability as a new prerequisite for the normative transition to residential independence. Second, patterns of postponement varied by social class. While middle-class youth strategically delayed independence by relying on both financial and emotional family support, lower-middle-class youth, lacking such support, postponed homeownership or remained in family housing without clear future plans. Third, for young women in regional areas, economic constraints, traditional norms, and gender-based discrimination contributed to distinct forms of postponement compared to men. Fourth, although many regional youth hoped to migrate to the capital region for better employment and educational opportunities, high housing costs and future uncertainty often led them to postpone relocation or return home. This study frames the postponement of residential independence among regional youth not as a personal choice but as a structural issue. It underscores the need for housing policies that support not only youth who have achieved independence but also those who have postponed it. The study calls for a reassessment of current youth housing policy and recommends providing education and counseling throughout the independence process.
