Abstract
The Northern Song Dynasty painter, Wang Shen completed the landscape painting Misty River and Layered Peaks(烟江疊嶂圖), which reconstructed his personal experiences during his unfortunate exile into his own images. The painting, which metaphorically expressed such personal experiences and impressions, was appreciated and sympathized with not only by fellow literati at the time but also by later literati, and poems and sentences about the painting were created. Wang Shen's Misty River and Layered Peaks are also mentioned as a typical example of literati painting that combines poetry, calligraphy, and painting. In particular, the poem written to this painting by Su Shi played an important role in the painting being considered a typical example of literati painting. As the four poems exchanged between Su Shi and Wang Shen became widely known, many literati used ‘Misty River and Layered Peaks(烟江疊嶂)’ as a subject of their poems or created poems about Misty River and Layered Peaks. This study aims to examine the formation of the poemtitle, ‘Misty River and Layered Peaks’, and its meaning by focusing on the poems related to Wang Shen’s Misty River and Layered Peaks. Through this, the iconography of ‘Misty River and Layered Peaks’ and its meaning and symbolism can be revealed. The scenery of ‘misty river’ and ‘layered peaks’ shows the humid atmosphere and emotions of the place of exile, and suggested the iconography of landscape painting called ‘Misty River and Layered Peaks’ to later painters and writers. At the same time, ‘Misty River and Layered Peaks’ became a symbol and iconography of exile, showing that neither his status as the son-in-law of Wang Shen nor Su Shi’s innate literary talent could be guaranteed in the midst of political turmoil.
