Abstract

This paper examines the origin and transformation of the myth of the goddess "Nüwa" (女媧), one of the representative deities in Chinese creation mythology, and analyzes the key characteristics of Chinese mythology and its social background. Nüwa is a creator goddess who created humans, repaired the sky, and established the institution of marriage. In the early matrilineal society, she was depicted as an independent and leading figure. However, over time, she transformed into a subordinate figure to the male deity "Fuxi" (伏羲). During the Pre-Qin period, Nüwa appeared as an independent creator deity, but after the Han dynasty, with the strengthening of Confucian order, her status as a female deity weakened, and her role was limited to secondary functions such as overseeing marriage and musical instruments. The transformation of the Nüwa myth reflects changes in the family system, gender roles, and power structure in Chinese society. The aim of this study is to demonstrate that the Nüwa myth, through its symbolism and evolving nature, is not simply a legend, but a cultural product that reflects the ideology, values, and worldview of its time.
