Abstract

While environmental films focus on exposing specific environmental issues and urging solutions, ecological films explore the harmony, coexistence, and ecological ethics among humans, nature, and all forms of life in an aesthetic dimension. In China, there exists the concept of “carbon-neutral films,” which emphasize carbon neutrality in their production and distribution. Chinese studies on ecological cinema often adopt Western eco-aesthetics as a philosophical foundation, yet they also refer to China’s indigenous traditions of naturalistic ecology. It is widely believed that the aesthetics of Daoism, Confucianism, and Buddhism are closely connected to the ecological wisdom and aesthetic concepts of traditional Chinese thought. Chinese ecological films have evolved from concerns about the restoration and harmony of natural ecology to those of social and spiritual ecology, resulting in diverse works representing these dimensions. These films integrate the theme of ecology with various genres, employing metaphors, irony, and contrast to express their ideas. Although they have succeeded in expanding markets and audiences, the overall screening scope and viewership remain limited, with few acclaimed new releases and a noticeable gap from globally recognized masterpieces. Many ecological films are produced and distributed under government initiatives; however, when their themes are conveyed in the form of environmental campaigns or coercive sermons, the essence of “ecology” fails to reach audiences effectively. Some interpret the pursuit of harmony with nature in Chinese ecological films through Hu Jintao’s notion of a “Harmonious Society” or read the idea of an ecological community in line with Xi Jinping’s “Community of Shared Future for Mankind.” Yet, an ecological community should not be a shared destiny exclusive to the Chinese people, but rather a realm where both humanity and nature coexist as equal agents without discrimination. Practitioners of Chinese ecological cinema must base their work on scientific truth and factual understanding of environmental issues. The production and dissemination of ecological films should go beyond environmental activism and develop into a new business model and ethical framework within the film industry that aspires toward carbon neutrality. Although technological innovation such as AI may help transcend existing boundaries, genuine innovation must still be rooted in human creativity. Furthermore, Chinese ecological cinema should transcend disciplinary, national, and censorship boundaries. Nevertheless, some ecological films that have successfully raised environmental awareness have been removed from online platforms or banned from screening for failing to comply with official film regulations. Such cases reveal the dual reality of Chinese ecological cinema, which must simultaneously engage in social discourse and navigate institutional and political constraints.
