Abstract

This study examines the cultural functions of Korean coffee culture and Chinese tea culture in the formation of regional identity within the context of globalization and regionalization. By comparing and analyzing the beverage cultures of the two countries, this study reveals how each culture constructs and reinforces regional identity through its unique fields of consumption and social practices. Korean coffee culture emphasizes the construction of individualized identities based on the logic of the ‘third place’, shaping a modern urban lifestyles through the fluidity of preferences and the reproduction of space. In contrast, Chinese tea culture, grounded in the logic of ‘community space’, strengthens collective identity and regional attachment through historical inheritance and the reintegration of local culture. The findings reveal that coffee culture promotes a globalized identity through the mediation of modern preferences and spatial fluidity, while tea culture consolidates indigenous identity by utilizing local characteristics and cultural cohesion. These differences illustrate the pathways through which regional identities are constructed and the ways in which cultural preferences develop within global cultural flows.
