Abstract
This study analyzed research trends on elder abuse within the fields of counseling and psychotherapy in South Korea and explored implications for psychosocial interventions. A total of 186 published in KCI-listed or candidate journals between 1994 and February 2025 were identified and analyzed in terms of publication year, study participants, methods, topics, and types of intervention. The number of publications increased notably following the 2004 revision of the Older Adults Welfare Act and the establishment of specialized elder protection agencies. Most studies focused on adults aged 60 and older, followed by elder abuse–related professionals and healthcare workers. Quantitative research comprised the largest proportion of studies, followed by qualitative, mixed-methods, and literature-based research. Major research topics were categorized as psychological and practice-based interventions, abuse-related factors, case and population characteristics, abuse types and perceptions, foundational studies, and prevalence or status reports. Intervention studies were classified into five categories: theoretical and system-level studies, research on strengthening intervention competencies, crisis response and safety assurance studies, prevention education and awareness-raising intervention studies, and intervention program studies aimed at enhancing emotional and psychological functioning among both victims and perpetrators of elder abuse. Findings highlight the need for strengthened psychosocial intervention models and clear priorities for future research.
