Meaning Construction of “SUN” in Thai Society: from Astronomy to Astrology

This study aimed to analyze meanings and meaning construction of “sun” in Thai society by means of cognitive semantics. Data were gathered from language use relating to “sun” and its attributes in different sources: spoken language, written language, and online platforms. The results show that meanings of “sun” can be divided into 5 groups: (1) star, which is a reference to an entity in real world; (2) attributes of sun, which are experience-based; (3) time, which is abstract concept constructed from concrete attributes; (4) mythology, which is imaginative concept constructed by metaphorical process; (5) astrology, which is integrated from concepts of group (1) to (4). Astrological concepts of sun make use of different concepts and attributes, especially “time”, “alphabet”, “red color”, and “number 1”, then relate to Thai lifestyle systemically. Those astrological concepts have always been evolved in Thai society and believed by many people.
