Abstract
The current study aims to investigate whether acculturation affects the fear of crime among Koreans in the Philippines. Previous studies assume that there is a correlate between acculturation and fear of crime among immigrants. However, there is a paucity of study about fear of crime and acculturation for Korean immigrants. In particular, it is necessary to conduct a study regarding the cause of the fear of crime and relationships between acculturation and fear of crime toward Korean immigrants who live in the Philippines. Recently, ten Korean immigrants were murdered in the Philippines a year. In this context, this present study has emphasis on examining the links between acculturation and fear of crime among Koreans in the Philippines. The present study employed the data of 114 Koreans who participated in the survey. The survey was conducted in the Angeles, Philippines with the support of Korean policeman(Korean Desk) from July, 2016 for about 15 days. This study used multiple regression analysis by utilizing SPSS package program. Result demonstrated that acculturation has a significant impact on fear of crime when other variables are controlled. However, the current study showed that length of stay in the Philippines is not a significant factor that affect the fear of crime. Furthermore, the result revealed that psychological attachment to ethnicity among Korean immigrants in the Philippines is a significant factor that is associated with fear of crime, when other variables are controlled. Due to the fact that acculturation is a crucial element that is related to fear of crime, there is a necessity to consider the specialized crime prevention strategies associated with increased level of acculturation toward Korean immigrants in the Philippines. Further discussion and policy implication will be included.
