Abstract

This study has a goal of identifying the impact of gender on the level of fear of crime toward Korean people who stay in Angeles, Philippines. There is a paucity of study that concatenates on the fear of crime of Korean immigrant people in Philippines. Therefore, the present study aims at finding the link between gender difference and fear of crime by employing multiple regression analysis. This study focuses on examining the associations between gender difference and the level of fear crime by considering the measuring issue of fear of crime. Specifically, the current study concentrates on classifying the fear of crime into three sub-dimension concepts in order to capture the true pictures of fear of crime and understand the impact of gender difference on fear of crime more thoughtfully. The present study utilized the data of 114 Koreans who voluntarily participated in the survey. The survey was conducted in the Angeles, Philippines with the support of Korean policemen(Korean Desk) who were assigned to Philippines from July, 2016 for about 15 days. Data were drawn from survey questionnaires, which had multiple levels of fear of crime. Moreover, this study employed SPSS statistics package program in displaying descriptive statistics, reliability test, chi-squared test, and multiple regression analysis to investigate the association of gender difference and fear of crime. Result revealed that there are no statistically significant group mean differences between male group and female group in terms of the number of prior victimization experience and the level of fear of crime. However, multiple regression analysis demonstrated that gender has a significant impact on the composit score of fear of crime when other variables are controlled. In this aspect, the current study outcome showed that females are more likely to have increased level of fear of crime when other variables, such as trust toward local police, prior crime victimization and relevant demographic variables are controlled, compared to male participants. Nonetheless, there was no statistically significant impact of gender difference on the fear of crime in the three different types of sub-dimensional fear of crime models, which include emotional model, cognitive model, and behavioral model. The concept of fear of crime is necessary to be measured in a more comprehensive way in order to find clear picture of the fear of crime. Futhermore, the result showed that gender-specific crime prevention strategies are required toward Korean females who live in Philippines. Due to the fact that females have a increased level of fear of crime, regardless of prior criminal victimization experience, scholars and practitioners should encompass the individualized needs of females in terms of their fear of crime.
