Abstract
Efforts to use big data in criminal justice agencies, such as police agencies, are increasingly accelerating. Institutions use big data algorithms in various areas such as crime prevention, crime response, victim protection, and trial, but there is still a lack of discussions about which type of big data application can be appropriate in which occupational field of police activities. In this study, the Principal-agent theory is used as an analytical framework. First, the types of big data policing are classified. Second, theoretical problems are analyzed according to the types of big data policing. Results have shown that 'internal use through crime prediction' could be the most appropriate type of usage. Overall, it was concluded that the use of 'personal biometric information database' or 'place-based crime prediction' in the field of 'investigation' or 'crime suppression' in police duties can be suitable types of use from the principal's point of view. The results of this study are expected to be a good compass for the Korean police's big data policing strategy and policy formation.
