Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the music performance anxiety(MPA) of Korean high school musicians and factors influencing on their MPA in order to provide information needed for the development of educational/therapeutic program to decrease MPA. The subjects of this study were the first, second, and third graders of music students who were attending an Arts high school in Kyunggi Do. Their majors were composed of piano, string instruments, wind instruments, and voice. Seven factors such as (1) gender, (2) grade, (3) major, (4) state anxiety, (5) trait anxiety, (6) short-term coping skill, and (7) long-term coping skill were investigated. The results showed that gender, grade, and major influenced significantly on their MPA. Females had significantly higher MPA than males, and third graders had significantly higher MPA than first graders. Singers showed significantly lower MPA than the other majors. State anxiety and MPA, and trait anxiety and MPA were highly correlated respectively, and the results of regression analysis indicated that these two variables were the most influential factors on their MPA. The results of short-term coping skill revealed that "positive thinking" and MPA, as well as "relaxation" and MPA were negatively correlated while drug and MPA were positively correlated. The results of long-term coping skill showed that "relaxation" and MPA were negatively correlated but "talk with friends" and MPA were positively correlated.
